Heat Pump Myths We Hear All the Time

“Heat pumps don’t work in New England.”

Today’s cold-climate heat pumps keep heating well below zero. The real question isn’t how cold a unit is rated for, it’s how much heat it still puts out at that temperature. We check the manufacturer’s rating sheet for every system we recommend and size it for your whole home, so it keeps up on the coldest days of the year.

“My electric bill will skyrocket.”

If you’re switching from oil or propane, your electric bill will go up in the winter. That’s expected. What matters is your total heating cost, and with little or no fuel to buy, most homeowners come out ahead over time. A heat pump that’s sized correctly, with sealed and insulated ductwork, runs efficiently instead of leaning on backup heat.

“If it runs all the time, something must be wrong.”

Not with a heat pump. Cold-climate heat pumps are designed to run almost continuously at a low, steady speed, and that’s when they’re most efficient. Running a lot doesn’t mean it’s costing you more.

“I should turn it way down at night to save money.”

With a traditional boiler or furnace, deep setbacks can save money. With a heat pump, they often do the opposite, because the system has to work much harder to recover. Small adjustments for comfort are fine, but steady settings usually save the most.

“I’ll have to rip out my ductwork.”

Not necessarily. Existing ductwork can often be reused if it’s the right size, sealed and insulated. If your home doesn’t have ducts, a ductless system avoids opening walls and ceilings altogether.

“It’s steaming outside, so it must be broken.”

That’s defrost mode. In cold, damp weather, frost builds up on the outdoor coil, and the system briefly reverses to melt it off. It usually lasts a few minutes, and you may hear some gurgling or swishing indoors while it happens. That’s normal.

Getting the Most From Your Heat Pump

A heat pump works differently than the boiler or furnace you may be used to. These habits will help you stay comfortable and save the most:

Settings

• Set it and leave it. Pick a comfortable temperature and keep it steady. Avoid big swings and don’t turn the system on and off to control the temperature.
• Choose “Heat” or “Cool,” not “Auto.” On mild days when you don’t need either, simply turn it off.
• Leave the fan on “Auto.” In very cold weather, a higher fan speed can deliver more heat and improve efficiency.
• Don’t shut it off when it’s freezing out. Cold-climate heat pumps are built for it. If anything, nudge the temperature up a little.
• Try “Dry” mode in humid summer weather. If your system has it, it can feel more comfortable than “Cool” and cost less to run. You may need to set the temperature a bit higher.

If You Have Ductless Units

• Use them to heat as much of your home as possible. Set them for comfort and don’t worry about the exact number.
• Keep the air vanes open so air flows freely.
• If you’re keeping your old heating system as a backup, set its thermostat 5–10 degrees lower than usual so the heat pump does most of the work. Keep doors open to help heat reach rooms without a unit.
• If your old system is the only heat in the basement, make sure it runs enough in very cold weather to keep pipes from freezing.

Simple Care

• Clean or replace your filters every 2–6 weeks, depending on your home.
• Keep snow, leaves and debris away from the outdoor unit, and never cover it.
• Take a quick look each season for damaged pipe covering, a dirty outdoor coil or oil drips near the pipe connections, and call us if something looks off.
• Schedule a professional heat pump tune-up once a year.
