How Mass Save Works


Home Energy Assessment

In order to qualify for the HEAT loan and whole home rebates, it is necessary to have undergone a home energy assessment within the past two years prior to installation.

  • Complete Any Necessary Weatherization:

    To be eligible, your system must be installed by a Heat Pump Installer Network (HPIN) member.

Receive a System Quote

Once your Home Energy Assessment has been scheduled, it is time to pick a qualified contractor to provide a quote and install your new system. When choosing a contractor, keep in mind the following…

  • Qualified Contractor:

    To qualify, your system must be installed by a member of the Heat Pump Installer Network (HPIN)

  • Manual J Calculation:

    Manual J calculations are necessary to qualify for certain rebates and loans. During your estimate, we conduct in-home Manual J calculations to ensure precise system design.

  • Ensure Equipment Qualifies:

    To be eligible for Mass Save incentives, heat pump equipment must be included on the HPQPL list. For fuel-based systems, they must meet specified efficiency guidelines.


Applying for a HEAT Loan

If you’re eligible and wish to make use of the HEAT loan, it’s necessary to submit a loan application before your installation. Mass Save evaluates your project, and upon approval, a participating lender disburses the loan funds. For additional information, please visit MassSave.com.

Complete System Installation

Once the preceding steps have been finalized, your installation can move forward.

You are required to cover the total cost of your installation, which is due upon completion of the installation.

This payment includes any rebates that Mass Save is expected to approve and disburse to you following the completion of your installation and rebate submission.

Following the completion of your system installation, rebate applications are submitted to Mass Save.

Once the project is paid in full and all necessary documents are provided, we’ll assist you in submitting your rebate application.

During the audit, qualified professionals will assess your property to determine areas where you can save on energy and costs including the need for insulation upgrades.

Step 2: Install Equipment for Rebates
If your audit identifies the need for equipment upgrades, it’s time Trust 1 to install the energy-efficient equipment that qualifies for rebates. Before installation, we make sure the proposed equipment is on Mass Save’s qualifying list.

Step 3: Receive an Invoice from Trust 1
Once the installation is complete, Trust 1 will provide you with an invoice that includes:

  • Contractor Name and Address
  • Model Numbers of Outdoor and Indoor Equipment
  • Model Numbers of Integrated Controls
  • AHRI Numbers
  • Installation Date
  • Installation Address
  • Total Installation Cost for Each System
  • Proof of Payment

This invoice serves as crucial documentation for your rebate application.

Step 4: Provide Insulation Information
We will inform Mass Save whether necessary insulation work has been completed or if it was not needed. This step ensures that all aspects of your energy efficiency improvements are documented.
