Refrigerant Leaks Deserve a Closer Look

A heat pump’s refrigerant runs in a sealed system, so it should never run low. If it does, there’s a leak, usually in the indoor or outdoor unit. Refrigerants have changed in recent years, so many parts for older systems are no longer available, and some leaks can’t be repaired.

We can recharge a system, but because the leak is still there, the refrigerant will eventually leak out again. We don’t recommend recharging as a long-term fix. Instead, we’ll lay out your options: repairing the leak when possible, recharging to get you through for now, or replacing the system, with the pros, cons and cost of each.
